Biennial – The Great Chain of Being

Project ContextThe Great Chain of Being is a landmark large-scale art installation presented at the Shanghai Biennale. It draws curators, artists, art critics and massive art-loving visitors. Therefore, the client needed far more than simple partition walls. First of all, they required custom-built huge simulated terrain ground to build a maze-like immersive visiting environment. In addition, they hoped to install multiple oversized metal art sculptures and wreck-style installation props. Meanwhile, dedicated projection zones, dark-environment media-playing areas and safe visitor circulation routes were required for audience exploration. What is more, all heavy-duty art structures, terrain modules and audio-visual circuits must meet art-museum safety codes and be fully completed within the tight pre-opening build-up timeline.Core Project ChallengesTo start with, the project contained many oversized, irregular metal art structures and simulated landscape terrain. As a result, high-precision cutting, welding and pre-assembly became critical technical difficulties. Secondly, the dim immersive exhibition environment required fine coordination between physical installation and projection light effects, without causing safety risks for walking visitors. Furthermore, we had to build complex labyrinth-style visiting paths, while keeping clear emergency escape routes inside the fixed museum venue. Besides, heavy-weight art components needed segmented factory pre-fabrication; modules must suit safe transport and fast on-site splicing. Last but not least, physical art props, multi-channel projection and ambient sound systems needed joint debugging under low-light conditions within limited on-site working hours.Solutions & Execution ProcessFirst off, our design and engineering team deeply studied the artist’s creative concept and the original museum venue’s space conditions. Next, we created multiple groups of 3-D spatial and structural drafts. After several rounds of feedback from artists and curators, we locked the final implementation solution. Correspondingly, we divided the whole art-event space into four practical functional blocks: main immersive terrain-labyrinth zone, large-scale physical-art-installation display zone, multi-media projection & sound-experience zone, and visitor entrance & emergency-passage buffer zone. Moreover, our engineering team optimized the load-bearing base for heavy art sculptures and simulated terrain structures. We reserved accurate mounting positions for multi-media projection and audio devices, and set up hidden safety-guards for dim-light walking areas. Right after design approval, all metal frameworks, terrain simulation modules and art-support components were manufactured inside PHILFLY’s own manufacturing base. Our team completed structural load-bearing tests, welding-quality inspection and factory pre-assembly checks. After full-quality confirmation, all segmented modules were securely packed and shipped to the biennial venue.Once materials arrived on-site, our skilled large-art-project construction team carried out step-by-step installation work. They laid the custom-simulated terrain ground, erected oversized metal art-installation frameworks, mounted sculpture props, set up multi-media projection hardware, and finished unified debugging for light, projection and sound-effect systems. Throughout the whole build-up phase, our dedicated project manager kept real-time communication with artists, curators and museum management teams. Whenever minor on-site adjustments for artistic presentation effects were needed, our team delivered fast and compliant solutions.Project OutcomeIn the end, all art-installation facilities and scene spaces passed museum safety inspection and were fully ready before the Shanghai Biennale opening. The completed mega-structure perfectly restored the avant-garde immersive artistic conception of The Great Chain of Being. Simulated terrain and large-size art sculptures built a mysterious labyrinth-style visiting environment. Matching projection and sound effects further strengthened the multi-sensory art experience. In addition, well-planned visitor passages and hidden emergency routes guaranteed safe visits for large groups of art audiences. This landmark contemporary-art-event project fully demonstrates PHILFLY’s comprehensive strength in Booth Design & Construction, complete-chain Exhibition Service and creative large-scale Event delivery. From early-stage concept docking, factory custom fabrication and logistics transport, to on-site installation and post-event dismantling, we manage every single workflow. We stick to our core business principle: win clients through real professional strength instead of low-price competition.
